Artist wins disposable camera competition (again!)
A packed house saw our largest ever Single Use Camera Competition for the Barbara Mallard Trophy in February.
Congratulations to the winner, Joan Pochin. This is the second year in which a painter has won, following on the whole top three being painters last year! Some photographic honour was saved by second and third being photographers, but it was another very strong showing for the painters. Proof again that all you need to do well is a good disposable camera and an eye for the image ...
Many thanks also to Manor Pharmacy, who generously gave us a supply of good Fuji disposable cameras to use.
Alan Webster's painting demonstration
Members were treated to a demonstration of watercolour and gouache painting at their meeting on February 1st at the Arena.
Long standing member and former Chairman of the Club Alan Webster painted a cockerel in gouache and then demonstrated his method for painting using watercolours, the theme being a Suffolk water mill.
Joint Painting Secretary Jean Parsons thanked Alan for his talk and demonstration, and for his many anecdotes which added much to an enjoyable evening.
The Elizabethan wardrobe revealed
A packed house at Shopmobility in January saw Maureen Taylor MA's engaging and fascinating insight into what was worn in Tudor times, from underwear upwards.
Maureen is a demonstrator at Hardwick Hall as well as a professional lecturer on this and similar subjects and can often be seen at Hardwick in her gorgeous costumes, which she makes herself.
After a detailed talk, she dressed herself - not an easy task either - as a lady of the late Elizabethan period.
Our own Val Grayson helped out with the demonstration, being dressed as a lady from earlier in Queen Elizabeth I's reign.

Practical photo night proves a success
(or 'how to have fun with tins')
Several members took advantage of Aleck's expertise and equipment at a fun and informal studio setup recently. Anne-Marie generously offered (or rather was 'volunteered') to sit as a model - and very effective she was. Unfortunately we couldn't stop Aleck getting in on the act as well. We also had great fun trying long and very quick exposures with an 'action' shot involving a ball and a lot of tins... Thanks to Aleck for his hard work.
Gareth Watling
British Bird Paintings
Professional artist Gareth gave a very interesting talk on his approach to painting and gave a demonstration of his meticulous and very precise method by painting the head of a Kingfisher in minute detail.
Several members purchased prints and cards of Gareth's work, and the artists among us will use Gareth's work as an inspiration for work at the following Monday meeting.

New archives section needs your images!
Your attention is drawn to the new tab taking you to the 'From the archives' web page.
This shows several images from J D Godber and H Walker, taken in the 1930's to 1960's, some of which are of excellent quality.
If you have any old IAC material (not just prints but pictures or anything else relevant) which could feature on the archive pages, please contact the Photographic Secretary.
J.D. Godber's 1967 print "September Morning" was taken on Wilmot Street, Ilkeston

Some of our summer field trips may have been a little damp due to the British weather, but a good time was had by all at both Southwell and Bradgate Park in August.
What a lovely evening... the Field Trip to Dale Abbey couldn't have had better weather and several members turned out to sketch and take photographs.
