An evening with an Elizabethan Lady
copyright (c) Grant Shaw 2011

Former Wollaton Hall guide Daryl Greaves entertained our meeting on 10th October in full Elizabethan costume as Lady Mary Willoughby, whose husband built Wollaton Hall in the 1580's.

Daryl described the history of the Willoughby family, the life of an Elizabethan lady and the building and use of Wollaton Hall up to its purchase by Nottingham City Council in the 1920's.

Club member Dr Jean Parsons gave sincere thanks to Daryl for her very interesting and enlightening talk.

Professional artist Ian Risley from Leicester demonstrated his talents with a pastel portrait of a Jack Russell Terrier at the Club’s meeting on Monday 12th September.

Ian specialises in animal portraits and showed some of his previous subjects including a pair of zebras and landscape scenes.
Ian generously donated the Jack Russell portrait to the Club.

26 members and guests attended the evening and Painting Secretary Joan Pochin thanked Ian for a fascinating and helpful talk which set members thinking about their own techniques for pastel work.

Annual General Meeting

Thanks to those members who supported the Club by attending the AGM. One of the principal decisions taken was, following a consultation with the whole membership, to consolidate to one meeting night and it was decided that the Club will meet on Mondays only at 7.30pm at the Elim Christian Centre, Charlotte Street from the new season.

Alan Webster is honoured by the Club

In recognition of his exceptional support to all of the Club's activities since joining in the early 1960's our former Chairman Alan Webster was appointed as an Honorary Vice-President of the Club at the AGM in April.

The nomination came as a complete surprise to Alan, not a man who is usually stuck for words particularly when speaking in support of the Club.

Although now in his 81st year, Alan could be found the day before the AGM helping to set up the Photographic part of the Annual Exhibition at Erewash Museum.

Well deserved recognition of decades' service to the Club.

Alex Miller, Tony Raven and Grant Shaw attended the annual N&EMPF Conference weekend in Lincoln on 16th April.

Good weather added to the excitement on a photo-packed tour of the City's lesser known places with the local Camera Club and various photo-related lectures ended a full and enjoyable day.

FUN IN THE DARK ... Part III

copyright (c) Grant Shaw 2011
Several members enjoyed lurking around St Mary's Churchyard in the growing darkness to perfect some interesting low light photo techniques on 7th April.

It just shows what interesting results you can get behind a church in complete darkness ... is that you, Tony?

 CAUTION : Mallard at work

David Mallard entertained, baffled, amused and ultimately awed members with another of his inspiring demonstrations at the Elim Centre on Monday 7th March.
Dave produced seven very different paintings and his unconventional methods included use of tissue paper, a credit card, household varnish and a handbrush to produce many varied effects, along with plenty of bright red and black paint.
An excellent evening and many thanks as always, David.

Disposable camera competition won by a painter yet again ...

copyright (c) Val Barnett 2011We are pleased to report that the Barbara Mallard Trophy was awarded to Val Barnett for her print 'Distant Tree, Derbyshire', following the Annual Single Use Camera Competition on February 24th.

This is the third year running that the competition has been won by someone better known for their painting than their photography, so very well done indeed, Val.

Jean Parsons was placed second with 'The Dead Oak' and Grant Shaw came third with 'The Market Inn'.

Thanks also to N&EMPF Judge Steve Myall EFIAP for his constructive comments and to those members who supported the competition.

Louise tells all about masks ...

Our Publicity Officer Louise Heaton showed the Monday meeting how to make Venetian Ball Masks using nothing more than aluminium foil and sweet wrappers - she made it look deceptively easy and showed us some of the exquisite and detailed examples she has made herself.

This was followed by a very enjoyable practical session for the audience. Thanks for all your hard work, Louise.
