OLD NEWS :

This is where we send the news when it becomes old (if you see what I mean) ...

Over twenty members and guests attended a very enjoyable demonstration by Sean Stevenson, local artist and member at the Elim Centre in February.

Sean demonstrated his watercolour techniques on two very different paintings, one of Strelley in the snow and another of a surfer riding a wave.  Many thanks, Sean.

We are pleased to report that members Geoff Buxton, Aleck Seddon, Alan Bannister and Grant Shaw have all had images and/or prints accepted for the North & East Midlands Photographic Federation Exhibition 2011.

This is the strongest showing from our club for a number of years. Congratulations!

We had an excellent evening on 10th January at the Elim Christian Centre with Linda Wain, a renowned wildlife artist from Belper.  Linda's paintings of exotic animals sell to collectors all over the world. She talked of her "research holidays" with her husband to places like India, Central America and Iceland.  They brought along prints, her own brand of paints, paper & brushes.  The attention to detail is fantastic on her paintings and she can take several months to complete one. Here is a picture of her and a lion she is currently completing.

Many thanks to Linda for taking the time to talk to us.

Jack Hutchby's collection enters the archives

copyright (c) Jack Hutchby estate 2010

Many members will remember Jack, a photographer member for many years until four or five years ago. He sadly died in September 2010, but his daughter Mary has kindly allowed us access to his large collection of mounted prints, many of which were entered for n&empf and other photographic exhibitions. We have copied selected prints for preservation on this website - see the 'From the Archives' section.

If you have access to any exhibited images or indeed paintings from members no longer with us your webmaster would be delighted to display highlights along with those already here from Jim Godber, Harold Walker and others.

Painter and photographer member Frank Priestley demonstrated his techniques for painting in oils to our Monday meeting at the Elim Christian Centre in November.

Thankyou, Frank, for an interesting evening presented in your usual unassuming and knowledgeable manner.

Several members including some new recruits enjoyed our second foray into the world of low light photography recently.
Great fun was had in and outdoors with some valuable experience gained about how to produce swirling light and ghostly long exposures.

FUN IN THE DARK ... Part I

Seven members had great fun on 9th September with our 'low light' evening, taking pictures up and down Chalons Way in Ilkeston and generally fooling around with light and long exposures.

It was great practice, and something several of us want to go back to later in the season.

Thanks to Alan Bannister for organising.

Bob Ebdon's coloured pencil demonstration
copyright (c) IACC 2010

Professional artist Bob entertained members on 4th October at the Elim Church with a demonstration of how he 'paints' using coloured crayons, soluble and 'ink' crayons by painting a pepper in eight different ways, much to members' interest.

His detailed approach using layers of colour starting with the lightest (or darkest) gave striking results.

Trams, vintage cars and traction engines (and a Dakota)

Our visit to Crich Tramway Village on 12th June coincided with a vintage Morris Club event, giving us much inspiration.

We also managed to pull in a visit to the Belper Steam Rally, which included a flypast from an ex-RAF Dakota.
Plenty of images were taken and the sunshine left some of us much pinker than when we started.  A good day and thanks to those who supported it.

copyright (c) IACC 2009Our Archives section STILL needs your images!
Your attention is drawn to the tab taking you to the 'From the archives' web page.

This shows several images from J D Godber, Jack Hutchby and H Walker, taken in the 1930's to 1980's, some of which are of excellent quality.

If you have any old IAC material (not just prints but pictures or anything else relevant) which could feature on the archive pages, please contact the Photographic Secretary.

 Pleasley trip presents some surprises

Several members enjoyed the sketching and photography trip to Pleasley Colliery and Country Park near Mansfield at the end of May.

It was a bit of a surprise to find all the colliery buildings including the headstocks gift wrapped and closed to the public, but an entertaining day was salvaged by looking for rare orchids in the park and by a visit to Pleasley's delightful church nearby.

NOTICES

Hon. Life Vice-President, N&EMPF

We are sorry to report that Dennis died suddenly on 2nd August 2010.

Dennis was a long time member of Long Eaton Camera Club and a good friend to IACC. He judged photo competitions for us on many happy occasions despite his own mobility problems. His good humour and constructive comments won him much goodwill and he will be very sadly missed both locally and regionally at N&EMPF, which he served as President until recently.

Anybody seen Grandma?

A very interesting trip was had on May 5th 2010 to the Anglian Wolf Trust near Bedford, where members spent over two hours photographing and observing four wolves in their enclosure.

After seeing feeding time, we were all grateful not to have worn anything which smelled of rabbit.

Dave demonstrates to a full house

The Club's Vice-Chairman (Painting) David Mallard gave a demonstration using charcoal, chalk and oil pastel to a packed room at the Arena recently.

Dave was as entertaining as ever, and if you weren't there you missed a treat.

Artist wins disposable camera competition (again!)

copyright (c) IACC 2010A packed house saw our largest ever Single Use Camera Competition for the Barbara Mallard Trophy in February.

Congratulations to the winner, Joan Pochin. This is the second year in which a painter has won, following on the whole top three being painters last year! Some photographic honour was saved by second and third being photographers, but it was another very strong showing for the painters. Proof again that all you need to do well is a good disposable camera and an eye for the image ...

Many thanks also to Manor Pharmacy, who generously gave us a supply of good Fuji disposable cameras to use.

Alan Webster's painting demonstrationcopyright (c) IACC 2010

Members were treated to a demonstration of watercolour and gouache painting at their meeting on February 1st 2010 at the Arena.

Long standing member and former Chairman of the Club Alan Webster painted a cockerel in gouache and then demonstrated his method for painting using watercolours, the theme being a Suffolk water mill.

Joint Painting Secretary Jean Parsons thanked Alan for his talk and demonstration, and for his many anecdotes which added much to an enjoyable evening.

The Elizabethan wardrobe revealed

A packed house at Shopmobility in January 2010 saw Maureen Taylor MA's engaging and fascinating insight into what was worn in Tudor times, from underwear upwards.

Maureen is a demonstrator at Hardwick Hall as well as a professional lecturer on this and similar subjects and can often be seen at Hardwick in her gorgeous costumes, which she makes herself.

After a detailed talk, she dressed herself - not an easy task either - as a lady of the late Elizabethan period.

Our own Val Grayson helped out with the demonstration, being dressed as a lady from earlier in Queen Elizabeth I's reign.

Some of our 2009 summer field trips may have been a little damp due to the British weather, but a good time was had by all at both Southwell and Bradgate Park in August. The Field Trip to Dale Abbey couldn't have had better weather and several members turned out to sketch and take photographs.

Practical photo night proves a success
(or 'how to have fun with tins')

Several members took advantage of Aleck's expertise and equipment at a fun and informal studio setup recently. Anne-Marie generously offered (or rather was 'volunteered') to sit as a model - and very effective she was. Unfortunately we couldn't stop Aleck getting in on the act as well. We also had great fun trying long and very quick exposures with an 'action' shot involving a ball and a lot of tins... Thanks to Aleck for his hard work.

Gareth Watling
British Bird Paintings

Professional artist Gareth gave a very interesting talk on his approach to painting and gave a demonstration of his meticulous and very precise method by painting the head of a Kingfisher in minute detail.

Several members purchased prints and cards of Gareth's work, and the artists among us will use Gareth's work as an inspiration for work at the following Monday meeting.
